Is Expensive Bedding Actually Worth It?
Sheets feel like one of those things nobody talks about until somebody brings them up. Then suddenly EVERYONE has an opinion. What starts as a simple recommendation somehow ends with people discussing linen, zipper closures, doona ties and whether a top sheet belongs on a bed with the kind of passion usually reserved for much bigger life decisions.
We discovered this while chatting to the team about what bedding they swear by. There were people who own separate bedding for different seasons, people who wait patiently for linen sales, and people who have spent enough time thinking about pillowcases that they have a preferred closure style.
Anyway, if you've ever wondered whether expensive bedding is worth the money, or you're simply curious about what everyone else is sleeping on, here's what the team had to say.

What bedding or sheets do you swear by?
Sheet Society at the moment! I really like the Eden Cotton
How much do they roughly cost?
$220 for Super King Doona Cover
What material are they? Have they washed well?
100% cotton, and they was really well. I put mine in they dryer and they come out perfectly.
What is your favourite thing about them?
They have a zip at the bottom, and piping around the edge. They’re also Sateen which feels luxe. They also do King Pillow Case covers which are hard to come by.
What is your least favourite thing about them?
How expensive they are, and that their Jersey version doesn’t do a King Pillowcase cover.
How many sheet sets does one person actually need?
We have three sets. Two every day sets and one christmas set.
Do you use a top sheet ?
I love a top sheet!!!! My husband does not, he kicks it off immediately so we don’t have one on our bed. But when I stay at hotels that’s one of the luxe things that I love.

What bedding or sheets do you swear by?
Adairs & I love linen
How much do they roughly cost?
Between $200-400 per piece, depending on brand and size.
What material are they? Have they washed well?
100% linen, they look as good as the day I bought them!
What is your favourite thing about them?
They get softer and cosier with time, plus they regulate temperature all year round.
What is your least favourite thing about them?
Linen as a fibre is $$$. But it’s money well spent!
How many sheet sets does one person actually need?
I’d say you only NEED two, one to wash, one to use. How many do I have? I’m too embarrassed to count.
Do you use a top sheet ?
Absolutely!!!
P.S. Jess regularly shares her bedding setups on Instagram @jessicaricci, and fair warning: they may inspire an expensive linen purchase.

What bedding or sheets do you swear by?
I Love Linen
How much do they roughly cost?
They are on the pricer side - a queen sheet set is $325 and I would always get a size up for the Quilt Cover (king is $265) because it looks a bit nicer with a deeper mattress (not having enough overhang is a personal pet hate). I used to work there and got to enjoy the benefits of a sweet employee discount (it’s very missed). BUT if it’s out of your budget i would say there are multiple sales a year where you can get them cheaper than this. They also at times have a sale that have free pillowcase sets (money win)
What material are they? Have they washed well?
100% french flax linen - they’re are all 170GSM which just means its still soft but durable at the same time.
What is your favourite thing about them?
Linen genuinely feels better and better after every wash! I also personally love the ties on the quilt covers + the pillowcase closure is in the middle at the back so it never slides off. So many of the colours pair well together so you can have sooo many different combos + they have heaps of double sided quilt cover options so you can get 2 looks for the price of one. WOW, you’d think i was a spokesperson of i love linen right now (i’m not haha).
What is your least favourite thing about them?
Unfortunately linen is soooo expensive.
How many sheet sets does one person actually need?
The limit does not exist (i would take one in every colour and shade tbh). I will say having 2 sets of sheets is life changing because you can make the bed immediately when you put your others in the wash (feels like a life hack).
Do you use a top sheet?
YES

What bedding or sheets do you swear by?
I do not share the same passion for sheets as the rest of the gals, and am not too fussed what I sleep on, however my mum did stock up on Linen House at a recent Harris Scarfe sale, so that is my current pick!
How much do they roughly cost?
For a queen bed, around $180, however you can get them on sale for $85.
What material are they? Have they washed well?
Cotton. And yes, haven’t noticed any issues post wash!
What is your favourite thing about them?
They’re pink! And match my barbie dream house room!
What is your least favourite thing about them?
Nothing to note - I am having a perf sleep on them.
How many sheet sets does one person actually need?
Hmm maybe 2-3. In winter (coming up soon), I usually switch to a flanalette set.
Do you use a top sheet ?
Yes!!!! A top sheet, a blanket AND a doona. That’s a must for me.

What bedding or sheets do you swear by?
The Lad Collective
How much do they roughly cost?
The fitted sheets in King are $185 & the pillow cases are $55/pair but I always wait for a sale! I think I want to try a quilt cover next
What material are they?
Have they washed well? 60% Bamboo, 40% Cotton, I’m no Brooke but they seem to wash fine!
What is your favourite thing about them?
Honestly I can never put a sheet on the right way the first time so the corner labels are a LIFESAVER
What is your least favourite thing about them?
Unfortunately the price (but now I’m converted so I fear I have no choice)
How many sheet sets does one person actually need?
I think two - one on and obvs a spare set. MAYBE three if you want another one (or if you see a cute colour) to be on the safe side but i think two is enough
Do you use a top sheet?
No??? I hate making the bed i’m not making it even harder on myself

What bedding or sheets do you swear by?
Milk & Sugar’s Linen Sheets (but it looks like they’re paring back the range?!)
How much do they roughly cost?
$325 for a king-sized doona cover. However, I got mine on sale ~40-50% off.
What material are they? Have they washed well?
Linen and heavens yes.
What is your favourite thing about them?
How they feel like a little luxury; a little vacay at home every time I change my sheets. That and the little ties inside the doona cover mean that I never lose it in the middle of the night.
What is your least favourite thing about them?
That they’re so spenny. I would love them in every colour.
How many sheet sets does one person actually need?
2-3. A winter set, a summer set, and a spare for to alternate with.
Do you use a top sheet?
No, but if someone is staying over I always give them a top sheet because it feels thoughtful.
So is it worth it?
We came into this hoping to find out whether expensive bedding is worth it.
We left with a list of sheet recommendations, a few linen shopping temptations, and absolutely no resolution on the top sheet debate.
What we did learn is that everybody seems to have their thing. For some people it's linen, for some it's a zipper closure and even a handly little corner label.
And honestly, we respect all of the above.
Now we'd love to hear yours. What's the best bedding purchase you've ever made?
